SECCO - Treasures from Wasteland

SeccoSECCO link innovative designers, producers, material collectors and recyclers. The result is a growing international and professional network that gives value to everyone involved. Founded by Nina Partanen and Isabella Haas – the SECCO network consists of an enthusiastic group of people and is based on criteria that unite makers and users: innovation, quality, cooperation and sustainability. SECCO gives a new purpose to waste and left-over materials by transforming them into funky high quality design products. SECCO’s collection consists of funky pieces of accessories and interior products. An international network of committed designers provides SECCO with sustainable product design solutions.

SECCO originated from the need to create a collection of products, which would combine purpose of use, quality and simplicity with an operation following the principles of sustainable development. The company is specialized in the development and marketing of high design products from post consumer and industrial waste materials.

SECCO’s workshop in central Finland is like a laboratory, where materials and production methods are tested in various ways. It is an open ground for students and professionals to experiment with their ideas. The production is small-scale and handmade. Another part of the production is carried out in co-operation with suitable local and international partner companies. Many of them are recycling centres and social firms, who employ mainly long-term unemployed, people with disabilities or immigrants who have difficulties finding a job. They are chosen and act according to SECCO´s needs and quality criteria.

The ideas are born through the qualities of the used material and design. SECCO products combine high quality, distinctiveness, simple design and funky materials. They are designed to last and to be produced in a sustainable way.

At the moment SECCO products are mainly sold through a retailer network consisting of museum shops and interior/life style stores, and its own flagship store situated in the centre of Helsinki in Finland. SECCO customers are usually urban, educated and design conscious with an interest in innovation and environmental issues. However, SECCO’s concept is to market products made from recycled materials in own shops around the world. Its second own shop will follow soon in Tokyo, Japan. Apart from SECCO's own collection each shop sells recycling design products from local and international artists and designers.

At SECCO car tyre inner tubes are turned into handbags, washing machine drums into stylish bowls, computer and type-writer keys into magnets and keyrings. There is an ever-growing stream of waste material that can eventually serve as the basis for new products without exploiting non-renewable resources and additionally burdening the environment. Even waste from one’s own production can be reduced and recycled. Creativity and courage are needed to change the way we design and produce today. The ultimate goal is to close the material cycle while providing meaningful and enjoyable work for everybody involved. Ecoresonance are delighted to introduce SECCO as a global partner who we will develop a variety of initiatives with in the future.
