Designer Profile - Damien Melotte

DamoDamien Melotte has coined the term ‘eco-emotional design to describe his work. His products are inspired by natural forms, emotional and environmental considerations and the sense of the sacred they contain. His creativity flows from his lifelong resonance with the Australian bush and a deep intuitive connection to the natural world. His totemic designs often place ornament in an educational context.

“I create forms with a deep organic resonance because I want to demonstrate the importance of our symbiotic relationship with the earth. I believe in living a sustainable future today and giving consumers the choice to do the same. It is up to designers to engage the urgency for sustainable living with all the creativity, ingenuity, imagination and zest that we have used to design products in the past that have utilised resources irresponsibly. People are looking for ways to change, ways to live a deeper and more fulfilling life that transcends superficial material product, we must give them the tools to do so. It is my hope that in healing themselves people will heal their relationship with the earth and vis-versa”.

Damien completed a Masters of Design with Distinction in 2002 at Curtin University in Sustainability, and has continued intensive research in Europe for the last 4 years. Damien was invited to exhibit in Milan, London and Brussels in 2005. He was selected to exhibit at the London [re]design Good and Gorgeous exhibition in 2006, and was recently elected Chair of o2 Australia, member of the o2 global eco design network.
